We have a few different recreational gymnastics options for your child at our Dunedin gym locations!

Each year in Terms 2 and 4, DGA hosts an exciting Rainbow Festival! This event provides our athletes with the opportunity to showcase their routines in front of supportive judges in a fun and safe environment. Every gymnast will be celebrated with a certificate, and those ready to progress to the next colour level will also receive a ribbon to mark their achievement. It’s a fantastic chance to shine and celebrate their hard work and progress!


At DGA, we proudly offer our new recreational RAINBOW programme, an innovative system designed to help children develop foundational gymnastics skills, along with essential strength and flexibility. The programme is structured into six progressive levels, each named after a colour of the rainbow. Each level/colour consists of around 15 skills that need to be mastered at each stage. The levels increase in difficulty from green onwards, which often requires more time for gymnasts to achieve proficiency.

Children aged 5-8 years old who are new to gymnastics begin in the RED level. This entry-level class will introduce them to basic gymnastics skills while familiarising them with the gym environment, rules, and procedures. From RED, gymnasts advance to ORANGE, then YELLOW, working towards the highest level—PURPLE. Progression to the next level is contingent upon demonstrating competency in all skills during Rainbow Testing.

Enrollment in the subsequent level is only permitted once the gymnast successfully completes their current level during Rainbow Testing Week.

For children aged 8 and above, we offer specialised classes: Girls and Boys Rainbow 8+, where they can join peers closer to their age and skill level.

Red Rainbow Gym Programme- Level 1

5 - 7 years old       60 mins

Red Rainbow Gym is a flexible, foundation programme developed to introduce children to gymnastics.

  • For ages 5-7 years

  • Get familiar with gym rules & their new environment
  • Apparatus covered are floor, bars, beam, and vault

Attached is a breakdown of the 'Skill List' that must be met prior to moving onto the next colour in the DGA Rainbow Gymnastics System.

  • Skill List Floor (before moving to the next level). Forward roll, Straight jump, Bridge (3 counts), Candle stick (3 counts), Bunny handstand, Front support with proper form, Cartwheel
  • Skill List Bar (before moving to the next level). Chin up pullover using wedge against the wall, Front support hold, 3 casts, Forward roll
  • Skill List Beam (before moving to the next level). Straddle mount (no legs touching beam), Knee scale, 6 walks on tip toes (no bent legs), 4 straight kicks, Straight jump, Toe to knee balance, Straight jump dismount to motor bike landing
  • Skill List Vault (before moving to the next level). Step straight jump using beatboard onto a mat.

Orange Rainbow Gym Programme- Level 2

5 - 7 years old       60 mins

Orange Rainbow Gym.

  • For young gymnasts aged 5-7 years who have done at least a year of gymnastics and are looking for a challenge
  • Apparatus covered are floor, bars, beam, and vault.

  • Skill List Floor (before moving to the next level). Sachets, Cartwheel step in, Half turn, 2x straight jumps, Scorpion handstand, Bridge on one foot, Front support, Arabesque.
  • Skill List Bar (before moving to the next level). Chin up circle over using wedge but only one foot on the wedge, Front support hold, 2 casts, Forward roll to pike hold, 2 swings with regrips to land.
  • Skill List Beam (before moving to the next level). Front support hold, Straddle mount, 4 front kicks, Straight jump, Pivot turn, 2 back kicks, Arabesque hold, Round off dismount.
  • Skill List Vault (before moving to the next level). Run jump on beatboard forward roll.

Rainbow Gym Programme - 8 years + (Orange Equivalent)

Rainbow Gym 8+ is a flexible programme to develop your child's gymnastics skills.

  • For female gymnasts who are ages 8+ and have never done gymnastics before or who have done very little!
  • These children simply start their training at an 'Orange' level just with more children their own age.
  • Apparatus covered are floor, bars, beam, and vault.

Yellow Rainbow Gym Programme- Level 3

Yellow Rainbow Gym.

  • For ages 7+
  • Master Intemediate skills with a focus on agility, balance, and confidence building.
  • Perfect for female gymnasts advancing from orange or who have done at least a year or two of gymanstics. 
  • Apparatus covered are floor, bars, beam, and vault.

  • Skill List Floor (before moving to the next level). Hurdle cartwheel, Cartwheel step in, Handstand hold, Backwalk over or bridge kickover, Backward roll to pike (on floor), Scissor kick, Arabesque, Front walk over or handstand bridge stand up, Handstand forward roll, Hurdle roundoff. 
  • Skill List Bar (before moving to the next level). Chin up circle over, 2 casts backhip circle, Forward roll to pike hold, High Bar L hang (3 seconds), High Bar chin up hold, High Bar dismount. 
  • Skill List Beam (before moving to the next level). Straddle mount, V sit, Half turn in crouch, Candle stick hold, 3⁄4 handstand, 2 kicks, Half turn.
  • Skill List Vault (before moving to the next level). Running to beatboard and doing a dive roll, running to beatboard and doing handstand flatback.

Green Rainbow Gym Programme- Level 4

Green Rainbow Gym.

  • Advance your gymnastics journey by mastering complex skills with an emphasis on strength, flexibility, and precision. 
  • Ideal for female gymnasts ready for a challenge. 
  • Gymnasts must have completed Yellow Level 3 or been told by their previous coach that this class is a fit for them.
  • Apparatus covered are floor, bars, beam, and vault.

  • Skill List Floor (before moving to the next level). Roundoff backhandspring, Handstand forward roll, Back walkover with leg starting high up.
  • Skill List Bar (before moving to the next level). Chin up circle over, High cast backhip circle, Jump to high bar, Circle up on high bar, Cast straddle undershoot.
  • Skill List Beam (before moving to the next level). Switch leg mount, Handstand, Backward roll, Straight jump, Split jump, Wolf jump, Roundoff dismount.
  • Skill List Vault (before moving to the next level). Using mini tramp run, jump, to do handspring to flatback over vault table, Using tumble track, run and land in front tuck on mat.

Blue Rainbow Gym.

  • For ages around 10+
  • This class is designer for advanced female gymnastics who are truly dedicated to the sport.
  • Perfect for those who have completed Green Level 4 or those who were instructed to be in this level by their previous coach. 
  • Apparatus covered are floor, bars, beam, and vault.

  • Skill List Floor (before moving to the next level). Roundoff cartwheel, Stride leap, Wolf jump, Front handspring forward roll.
  • Skill List Bar (before moving to the next level). Chin up circle over, Cast to backhip circle, Stoop on to high bar, Circle up on high bar, Baby giant, Back hip circle, Backhip circle.
  • Skill List Beam (before moving to the next level). Circle up mount, Chasse, Scissor kick half turn, Full turn on one foot, Back walkover, Front tuck dismount.
  • Skill List Vault (before moving to the next level). Using mini tramp, run front handspring over vault table.
